WHAT IS MIGRAINE?

Migraine is a neurological condition which can be characterized by repetitive occurrence of intensely severe and throbbing headaches. It sometimes comes with sensitivity towards light and sound, nausea, vomiting, sensory warning signs, numbness and difficulty in speaking. What causes migraine?

What are the symptoms of migraine?

Symptoms of migraine can start anytime. Sometimes it can happen just before, immediately after, during or after the headache takes place. Some, usual symptoms are as follows:

  • Severe, throbbing or debilitating pain
  • feeling a prickling or tingling sensation in your face, arms, or legs
  • feeling sick, nausea and vomiting

  • seeing shapes, light flashes, zigzag lines or bright spots
  • feeling tired, weak or short of breath due to anaemia
  • temporary loss of vision

Sweating, temperature changes, stomach ache and diarrhoea are some other symptoms which can be experienced.

What are the different types of migraines?

Migraine is categorised into two primary types. Migraine with aura and migraine without aura.

Migraine with aura

It is based on individual experience of triggers and disturbances in the senses causing migraine attack. Also known as classic migraine, in migraine with aura the pain can be lead by some warning signs such as:

  • confusing thoughts
  • visualising blind spots, zig-zag lines, sparkling or flashing lights
  • experiencing pinch like pins and needles in an arm or leg

  • loss of sensation

Migraine without aura

Also known as common migraine, migraine without aura attacks individual without any warning signs or sensory disturbance. About seventy to ninety percent people experience migraine which attacks without any aura.

Other types of Migraine

Following are other different migraines which occur less frequently and are related to some specific triggers:

  • Chronic migraine: This migraine can trigger attacks anytime on over 15 days of the month.
  • Menstrual migraine: It has a specific pattern of occurrence related to the menstrual cycle in women.
  • Hemiplegic migraine: This migraine attack can cause temporary weakness on one side of the body.
  • Abdominal migraine: This migraine is connected with irregular functioning of the gut and abdomen. It is known to usually affect children below 14 years of age.
  • Migraine with brainstem aura: It is a rare migraine form which triggers critical neurological symptoms, such as problem in speaking.
